Video: Calm Coco

Coco, like so many bears, finds her calm and peace at the end of the day. She’s a day‑active lady, and this moment was captured after she had finished her fishing, navigating around boats and worked through other challenges throughout the day. As she moved through the park with her quiet, practiced confidence as evening settles in, she shifts into a serenity that feels almost sacred.

That’s what we witnessed in those gentle twilight moments in her presence. Coco is beautiful, strong -but kind‑spirited, and commanding of respect in her presence. We felt nothing but gratitude watching her. These amazing animals continue to teach us how to slow down, how to be present, and how to simply be. As always, the most remarkable part was how willingly she shared that peaceful time with those she trusted.

📖 Stories & Field Notes

  • A confident, steady presence on the Atnarko River, respected by all female bears. Guides consider her a bit of A Matriarch.
  • Observed wrestling Rocky roughly when he was young, shutting down his pushy behaviour instantly — a sign of her strong maternal discipline.
  • Raised Rocky to be a well mannered, socially competent bear.
  • Coco and Rocky are still friends, and prefer to hang out at times fishing-even as a 10 year old mature male. She is clearly very close to her boy.
  • Her long, drawn out stares can make even seasoned guides squirm and straighten up.
  • Though never aggressive, she has a way of making people want to please her and give her space.
  • Maintains long term “friendships” with certain guides she trusts.

Coco is the respected matriarch of the Atnarko River, known for her calm confidence and unmistakable presence. Born in 2004, she’s a solidly built, dark furred grizzly with expressive amber eyes and a distinctive red tinged crown. Coco is thoughtful and steady around people, offering long, meaningful stares that remind visitors to show respect. A devoted mother, she raised Rocky—now the valley’s dominant male—with firm guidance and fairness. Trusted by local guides and admired by other bears, Coco embodies wisdom, strength, and the deep social intelligence that defines the BearKind community.
